European Researchers' Night in Novo mesto (Slovenia): University and School Centre promotes wExchange project and student well-being

European Researchers’ Night is an annual event held across Europe to promote research and bring scientists and researchers closer to the public. This year it took place on Friday 29 September 2023. It included activities such as science demonstrations, experiments, workshops, and lectures that allow the public to interact with researchers and learn more about their work.

The European Researchers’ Night takes place in various European cities, including Novo mesto, the capital of southwestern Slovenia. At this event, organised by the University of Novo mesto, the School Centre Novo mesto and the university presented the wExchange project to the public, which promotes mental health and raises awareness of the importance of mental well-being. The event included various interactive activities and lectures by experts in the field. Participating in the European Researchers’ Night provided valuable insights into cutting-edge research and provided resources for individuals interested in promoting mental wellbeing in their communities. It was a great opportunity to learn and network with professionals working in the field of mental health and secondary school students.

The mental health of secondary school students is of critical importance as these years are a crucial developmental period. Students are under academic pressure, have to navigate complex social dynamics and come to terms with their own identity. Good mental health supports optimal learning, promotes resilience, and helps students manage stress and emotions. Conversely, untreated mental health problems can impair academic performance, affect relationships, and increase the risk of substance abuse, self-harm, or other harmful behaviours. Prioritising mental wellbeing ensures that students not only perform academically, but also develop important life skills that provide the foundation for a balanced adult life.
